OLPC Achievements
- In 2005, OLPC had success with lobbying for Office of the Chief Veterinarian
- Since 2007, quarterly newsletters are published on OLPC activities and animal health topics
- In 2008 OLPC helped develop an Ontario Emergency Mass Carcass Disposal Planning Guide and Workbook for municipalities which was updated in 2018
- Advocated for the Animal Health Act which came into effect in 2009
- In 2009 and 2010, OLPC coordinated an on-farm biosecurity survey to assess what resources their members require in order to heighten their level of protection
- On-going advocacy for the financial support of the Animal Health Laboratory
- Partnered with Agricultural Response Materials Management Inc. to establish an inventory of emergency response equipment and materials
- Developed biosecurity checklists, articles and presentations and supplies biosecurity stop signs to farms of any size
- Assisted in writing revisions to the On-Farm Carcass Disposal in the Environmental Farm Plan Workbook
- On-Farm biosecurity resources were developed with support from OMAFRA
- Developed resources to be used in farmer biosecurity workshops under Growing Forward 2 and the Canadian Agricultural Partnership
- Wrote biosecurity protocols targeting tour organizers and farm hosts for foreign visitors to farms
- Coordinated and/or participated in nine biosecurity and emergency response sessions for commodity groups and municipalities
- OLPC continues to send out disease alerts and media articles on animal health topics
- Currently provider of Emergency Preparedness Resources
ARMMI…Protecting Agriculture
Agriculture Response Materials Management Inc. (ARMMI) was a not-for-profit organization committed to ensuring that, in the event of a disease threat or emergency, farmers and farm workers would have access to an adequate supply of biosecurity materials. Biosecurity is vital to ensure containment and control of disease.
ARMMI was an initiative of the Ontario Livestock and Poultry Council and was incorporated in 2008.
Founding members included Chicken Farmers of Ontario, Egg Farmers of Ontario, Turkey Farmers of Ontario, Ontario Broiler Hatching Egg & Chick Commission, Association of Ontario Chicken Processors, Poultry Industry Council and the Ontario Livestock & Poultry Council. Funding for the stockpile project was provided by Agriculture & Agri-food Canada through the Agriculture Adaptation Council CanAdvance Program, and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs and the four feather boards.
This program closed as of April 2021.
